Set up Monologue on iPhone or iPad

Enable the Monologue keyboard, allow microphone access, and dictate inside other apps.

Monologue works as a custom keyboard on iPhone and iPad. Setup has two parts: enable the keyboard in iOS Settings, then allow the permissions used for dictation.

Enable the keyboard

1. Open the Monologue app and complete onboarding.
2. Open Settings → General → Keyboard → Keyboards.
3. Tap Add New Keyboard, then select Monologue.
4. Tap Monologue in the keyboard list and turn on Allow Full Access.

Full Access lets the keyboard process dictation while you are typing in another app. iOS shows the same general warning for every third-party keyboard; Monologue uses this access for the features you choose to use.

Allow microphone access

Return to the Monologue app and allow microphone access when prompted. If it was previously denied, open Settings → Privacy & Security → Microphone and enable Monologue.

Switch to Monologue

1. Open any app with a text field.
2. Touch and hold the globe key on the current keyboard.
3. Choose Monologue.
4. Tap the microphone in the Monologue keyboard and speak.

The finished text appears in the active text field. You can change keyboard behavior under Monologue → Settings → Keyboard.

Optional shortcuts

On supported iPhones, Monologue can also start Quick Dictation from the Action Button. Open Monologue → Settings → Action Button and follow the guided setup. The app also exposes actions to Apple Shortcuts.
